Eminent Scientist Lt. Col. (Dr.) L.R.A. Narayan
Eminent Scientist Lt. Col. (Dr.) L.R.A. Narayan was the first Director of Applications Area, National Remote Sensing Agency at Hyderabad. He made extraordinary contributions in the fields of surveying, cartography, photogrammetry and Remote Sensing applications. Lt. Col. (Dr.) L.R.A. Narayan, joined army and was seconded to Survey of India. After post graduation course in Integrated Survey of the natural Environment at the International Institute of aerospace technology and earth sciences ( Called ITC), Netherlands in 1972-73, he was posted to then Indian Photo Interpretation Institute (IPI), Dehradun as its Deputy Director and Professor of Photogrammetry, a newly established set up of the Survey of India. On establishment of National Remote Sensing Agency he was deputed to NRSA as Head Application Division. After retirement in army, he joined regular service of NRSA in 1979 and served till February 28, 1989. He held many important positions, as Director of Applications and Associate Director. Dr. L.R.A. Narayan made remarkable role in addressing environmental issues, wasteland mapping and Ground Water Assessment, which provided much needed information for undertaking a variety of development programmes.
In 2001, Dr. L.R.A.Narayan became the recipient of the Bhaskara Award, instituted by the Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS). He has also received the prestigious The Schwidefsky Medal from the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing in Amsterdam (2000). He authored as many as 60 articles on remote sensing for leading English daily, The Hindu.
Lt. Col. (Dr.) L.R.A. Narayan passed away on Feb. 6, 2016.
