Nation-wide mapping of Land degradation on 1:50000 scale

Nation-wide mapping of Land degradation on 1:50000 scale

This project has been carried out under Natural Resources Census programme. Digital database for land degradation was generated using multi-temporal Resourcesat-1 LISS-III satellite data coupled with ground observations. Subsequently the land degradation information has been integrated with forest degradation information from Forest Survey of India (FSI). The final classification schema adopted for this project includes nine land degradation process, seventeen type / severity levels. The Land Degradation classes are Water erosion (Sheet erosion, Gullies/ Ravines), Wind erosion (Loss of top soil, Stabilized / Un-stabilized dunes), Waterlogging, Forest degradation (Forest Degradation, FD with Land transformations), Salinisation / alkalization (salt affected soils – slight, moderate, Severe), Acidification, Glacial (Frost heaving, Frost shattering), Mass movement, Barren rocky Areas, Anthropogenic, and Others.
