Collaborative Research

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Provides financial support under RESPOND Programme for conducting research and development activities related to space science , space technology and space applications in universities and academic institutions in India. In special cases research and development project proposed by non-academic R&D Laboratories can also be supported trough this Programme. The main objective of the RESPOND programme is to establish strong links with academic institutions to carryout quality research and developmental projects of relevance to space and derive useful outputs to support ISRO programmes. The aim of RESPOND programme is to enhance academic base, generate human resources and infrastructure at the academic institution to support the space programme. Under the broad umbrella of respond. ISRO runs space technology cells at IITs, IISc and Pune university which coordinate research proposals within the respective institutions. Respond at NRSC is implemented under the umbrella of ISRO Respond and caters to specific research topics pertaining to NRSC activities. The programme at NRSC has evolved into a dynamic & respective face of Respond and contributes significantly to ISRO programme on Sponsored Research.

Overview of NRSC Activities

National remote sensing centre(NRSC) formerly known as National remote sensing agency(NRSA) under ISRO, Department of Space, Govt. of India, is engaged in the acquisition of Remote Sensing satellite data, processing, dissemination and value addition of aerospace data to operationalise space technology for monitoring & management of natural resource, environment and natural disasters. NRSC operates through its four wings, namely satellite data acquisition products and services, Remote Sensing & GIS applications, Aerial services and digital mapping and Regional centres located at Jodhpur, Kolkata, Nagpur and Bangalore. The processed satellite data is disseminated to users through NRSC Data Centre.

Activities in Brief:
  • Data Processing deals with Satellite data product generation, Value addition and Data dissemination to facilitate enhanced utilization of RS data
  • Hardware and Software Development for Data Acquisition and Processing
  • Expertise in establishing ground station facility for IRS satellites and providing Data Acquisition and Processing solutions to various countries.
  • Archival and Management of global data from IRS and other satellites
  • Geospatial services in the areas of land, Bio, Earth, water and Marine Resources, Environmental Analysis, Atmospheric sciences, Urban Development, Geoinformatics.
  • Disaster management services(24x7) to support during floods, agricultural drought and forest fires and for the disaster events like cyclones, landslides and earth quakes. Aerial surveys and extending large scale mapping services cartographic mapping and digital data services to the civilian sector.
  • Outreach through the training, workshops, student projects, and promotional activities related to remote sensing applications at regional and national level. Bhuvan the geospatial of ISRO showcases Indian imaging capabilities in a multi-sensor, multi-platform and multi temporal domain. This portal is a gateway to explore and discover virtual earth in 3D space, with specific emphasis on the Indian region.

Chairman ,ISRO formed the management council for respond. The RESPOND management council is expected to provide overall guidance to RESPOND programme at ISRO level. The ISRO level activities are executed and monitored by Dy.Director,RESPOND. At NRSC, the RESPOND Programme is coordinated and monitored By RESPOND Review Committee(RRC). The RESPOND Programme is carried out under the overall responsibility and guidance of RRC. The committee scrutinizes new proposals based on comments given by NRSC expert and reviews each project. Once in a year, RRC Conduct a detailed review of respond projects mainly on progress, fund and duration of ongoing projects and provide recommendations. During these reviews, Principal Investigator(PI) are encouraged to bring out technical issues. The centre Respond activities are coordinated by Convenor/coordinator, Respond.
